So I had plotted out my yuletide strategy based on offering three fandoms, but this year you had to offer four! So I offered the song "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" by Arcade Fire, sure I would never get it, because I figured as a backup at least it's a song I really like, and it's always annoying to have to catch up on a really long canon and the great thing about a song is that it's only 3 minutes of canon and also I would never get assigned it anyway. Ha. Ha. ~irony~
Anyway, the song's about what sounds like an apocalyptic event and also has a lot of alchemy references, so when I started poking at it to see what kind of story I wanted to write, I started reading about alchemy, which was mostly about the search for eternal life, and when you get eternal life + disastrous event, my head goes immediately to the Mesopotamian Flood story, where the flood survivor and his wife are giving immortality by the gods, because I am a wretch. So I ended up writing Mesopotamian mythology fanfiction about the wife of Ziusudra/Uta-napishtim/Atrahasis (that, by the way, is not easy to tag on AO3, o-or anywhere) and the two of them being in the band singing this song.
So yeah, basically I offered this fandom to minimize research, but then to write this fic I ended up researching alchemy, the fountain of youth and other myths about immortality, the textual history of the flood story in Mesopotamia, theories about actual prehistoric floods, the draining of Lake Agassiz, when the Persian Gulf may have filled in, Neolithic nutrition and ethnicity, the etymology of the names of the flood survivor, etc, etc, etc. It just goes to show that you can try not to be the wretch you are, but you will fail.
ANYWAY SO HERE'S MY YULETIDE FIC YOU GUYS, SORRY ABOUT THE LONG EXPLANATION.
Title: How Strange It Is to Be Anything at All
Fandom: Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)/Near Eastern Mythology
