I'm just going to jump the fence and jog home.

Lately, in the television show of my life, a lot of RL characters who left the series years ago have suddenly popped up out of nowhere to cause drama, as though we're a) having ratings problems, and b) gearing up for a big season finale. Which is a little troubling, because I do not have time for the mayor to turn into a giant snake at my students' graduation, you guys.

Anyhow, actual television! I have been watching my stories, but haven't found time to post about it, because now they're on EVERY WEEK which takes me by surprise. I'm all, "B-But we just had a new episode seven days ago! Shouldn't there be a four month wait now?"

The Office

Things That Have Delighted Me Since The Writers' Strike:
1) Hot coked up Ryan
2) Phyllis, coming alive! ("No, all right, no, she can't fit in a rowboat.")
3) Kevin breaking my heart and being hilarious -- WAY TO ACT, BRIAN
4) Andy Bernard, just in general
5) Hot coked up Ryan
6) Pam's adorable back-up glasses ahahaha. We've all been there.
7) Jan/Hunter??????? Ahahahaha.
8) TOBY FLENDERSON: BATMAN?
9) Everyone in the office shipping Andy/Angela more than Jim/Pam
10) Dwight Schrute, Ladies' Man???? ("I'm not going to call her.") That was hot, I'm not going to lie to you.
11) Hot coked up Ryan reprimanding Jim Halpert hahahaha
12) Jim wanting to abandon Pam at Michael's dinner party -- haha, I totally agree, Jim, it was an every-man-for-himself situation. Also apparently I really enjoy it when Jim isn't being Your Perfect Gay Boyfriend, especially since it didn't bother Pam at all and she pwned his ass anyway.
13) Pam Beesly being SUPER AWESOME AND DELIGHTFUL ALL OVER THE PLACE. Haha, when Dwight showed up at the dinner party with his babysitter and she says, "Awesome." Heeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
14) Jim Halpert: kind of racist? See #12 above.
15) Darryl: NEWSIE.
16) Hot coked up Ryan?

I keep wanting to write post-ep fic where Ryan wakes up, all hungover, sleeping all smooshed in between Michael and Dwight with a cameraman filming him, sore because some girls beat him up. I believe that is the definition of "rock-bottom," right there.

Things That Have Perturbed Me Since The Writer's Strike:
1) Dinner Party was definitely the most uncomfortable episode since Phyllis's Wedding. Auuuuuugh I could barely make it through and I am usually completely fine with this show's discomfort level.
2) The storyline that began with Jim going fishing with his cousin Deagol?

God, I am really hoping this effing engagement thing is going to end with Pam turning him down, because holy CRAP, buying a ring a week into a relationship is so incredibly creepy. I mean, they may have been friends for years, but being friends is not DATING. Also, THEY HAD BARELY SPOKEN FOR A YEAR. Also, he had JUST broken up with Karen. I feel like him doing that shows more than ever that his relationship with Pam is half-fantasy. Ugh, it gives me the creeps. GROW UP, HALPERT. Also, fake joke proposals aren't cool.

That whole thing was extra upsetting because Jim and Pam have been being super cute and chill lately and I was really shipping them. GOD, SHOW. YOU BETTER DO SOMETHING INTERESTING WITH THIS. Because if Jim proposes by suspending the ring in Jell-O like something out of one of the NUMEROUS TERRIBLE FICS ABOUT JIM AND PAM GETTING ENGAGED, you guys, I will shoot someone in the head. Possibly myself.

How I Met Your Mother

I love this show, you guys. It is my happy place. The fandom has EXPLODED since the Barney/Robin thing, though, which is weirding me out. (Also I run the fic comm so I am tagging and tagging and tagging and EVERYTHING is Barney/Robin which -- hey, I love them too, but would it kill you guys to write a Ted/Marshall once in awhile? COME ON.) And I just -- I just don't want fandom to ruin my happy show for me, okay? Look what happened to Jim Halpert. ANYway, in terms of actual content, I'm really enjoy the Barney/Robin storyline, obvs, and Ted's being really super charming with Stella. But the Ted/Barney breakup is BREAKING MY HEART (I was seriously really sad for a couple of days afterwards, no fooling), so I REALLY REALLY HOPE they make up by the finale. DON'T BREAK UP, YOU GUYS, YOU'RE GREAT TOGETHER.

30 Rock

FLOYD!!!!!!! COME BACK, FLOYD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, "Choosing a sandwich over a guy. That's less cliche." And "I CAN HAVE IT ALL" through the sandwich KILLED ME FOREVER.

Also, I have never been much of a Jack/Liz shipper, but Alec Baldwin is giving her some LOOKS lately. If Tina Fey doesn't want people shipping them, she should get that under control. Yeesh.

SVU

Okay, seriously, the first 40 minutes of Olivia going undercover at the women's prison confirmed my opinion that this show is the best comedy on television, but then the last 20 minutes were just straight up torture porn. I was honestly so angry and offended I turned it off and vowed never to watch again.

And whatevs, so I watched the Robin Williams episode (which... this show has just given up on making sense, hasn't it?) because I heard Elliot touched Olivia's neck, but I AM STILL REALLY CLOSE TO BEING DONE WITH IT FOREVER. I SWEAR TO GOD.

Life

I am still so late to the party on this one, but I love this show so so so so so much. Charlie Crews may be my favorite character ever put on television, and that's a fact. OH LOOK, THIS SHOW HAS CHARACTERS WITH LAYERS. I think what I really like about it is that you have some characters with serious, serious issues, but they're not all angsty all the time -- they're also funny, and they're coping, and they can do their job and have a life and get through the day. And they're actively trying to deal with themselves, both Charlie with his Zen-ish nonsense and Dani with her half-hearted AA, and I really like that. And I enjoy how the format of it is a procedural, but the characters act more like the cops on Homicide, talking about other things at the crime scene, with things beyond the case going on.

Also, I love how Charlie is dorky and funny and annoying, but then also REALLY FUCKING INSANE AND SCARY. And I also really love how Dani is honestly irritated with him most of the time, and rightly so -- and it's not sexy annoyed, it's, like, dumb little brother annoyed. And how when Easley shows up the dynamic is totally big sister, middle brother, baby brother, and they're driving her crazy. ALSO, I LOVE TED A LOT.

In conclusion, I really need season 2 to start, because there's only so many times I can watch the 11 episodes that exist.

(P.S. This poem, which was one of my favorites before I'd even seen this show, is so Charlie Crews I can't even deal.)

In Treatment

Have any of you guys seen this? My parents and rockstar!bro were talking about it when we were all on vacation together, and GOD, it's a good show. I never thought people just sitting in a room and talking could be so incredibly compelling.

I didn't even know the season finale of 30 Rock was this week until I went over to NBC's website. Now I am sad. Just when I'd gotten used to having my shows back, they're taking them away again.

FLOYD!!! With his mussed hair!

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, is it already this week??? SAD FACE. I seriously wish they'd spaced them out more -- what, we have ages and ages off, a month on, and then back to nothing? SPREAD OUT THE WEALTH, YOU GUYS. I feel like a camel between oasises. (Oases?)

Floyd is my favorite, seriously. COME BACK FOREVER, SUDEIKIS!

Right? I LOVE that relationship -- and I love that Charlie really IS being annoying most of the time, that it's not a made up irritation. I mean, if someone just kept repeating things over and over, or talking about how all of us might be angels or whatever, you WOULD kind of want to hit him. Heee. Also, you really just don't see people being annoyed that often on television, which is the opposite of how most of life is, hee.

Seriously, the complexity of the characters is AWES.

1. HOT COKED UP RYAN. My RL Office-watching buddy did not understand me when I told her that I preferred hot coked up Ryan to Jim, and I haven't decided yet whether we can still be friends.

2. FLOYYYYYYYD. The same person was also very confused at my squealing when Floyd showed up. (But it's FLOYD. Everyone wants a Floyd!)

3. AUGH, SVU. I totally watched the Robin Williams one, too. And this week's. And probably next week's, too, since it looks HILARIOUS, and I want to see if they kill Casey. I am so bad at breaking up with this show. Maybe Life coming back can fill the police procedural-shaped hole in my heart?

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
1. HEE. BANNINATED. DEFRIENDED. God, seriously, Ryan with his half-beard and his unbuttoned shirt and his coke addiction is just maddeningly hot. It's out of control. Whereas Jim's hair is worse every time I see him, like he's doing some kind of tribute to small animals with his head.

2. IF I COULD PICK A TV BOYFRIEND, FLOYD WOULD WIN BY A LANDSLIDE. I just want to play Uno and high five, is that so wrong?

3. God, I know, I'll probably watch them too, but -- this show DOES NOT DESERVE IT. (Omg, if they kill Casey!!!! I would feel half sad, but half triumphant, I don't even know.) But seriously, once Life is back, the position of cop show WILL BE FILLED, SVU. FOR REAL, THIS TIME.

1) As someone who digs Jack/Liz, I have to concur with your statement: either Alec Baldwin is totally in love with Tina Fey and can't contain himself, or the directors are just too chicken to tell AB "Hey, um, guy? Jack Donaghy doesn't want to marry Lemon."

Either way, I would read fic...about either of those RL situations

2) YES to everything you said about Life. YES TO EVERYTHING.

In conclusion, I really need season 2 to start, because there's only so many times I can watch the 11 episodes that exist.

Honest to God, I think I've scratched up the episodes I have watching it over and over and over and over again.

I do love how Charlie drives her up the wall and you can see Dani trying to refrain herself from hitting him with something very large.

characters with serious, serious issues, but they're not all angsty all the time -- they're also funny, and they're coping, and they can do their job and have a life and get through the day. And they're actively trying to deal with themselves, both Charlie with his Zen-ish nonsense and Dani with her half-hearted AA, and I really like that. And I enjoy how the format of it is a procedural, but the characters act more like the cops on Homicide, talking about other things at the crime scene, with things beyond the case going on

This whole thing I have to quote because yes. I do love how they have legitimate issues but it doesn't feel like their emo angsting about it. In fact, one of the things I love when Larson went out to prove that Dani was just faking her pain, she reversed the tables and showed him that his emo man pain is only just that, emo.

In conclusion, I talk a lot when it comes to this show and I should really, really watch Homicide. It's been mentioned whenever Life is talked about.

HIMYM

I love the cast here so much and been pleasantly surprised with how they handled Barney/Robin and I honestly like Ted and Stella together but you are right, Barney and Ted should get back together pronto! Although, I did love Barney's rebound bro, he must return too!

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously only got into Life like a month or two ago, but I'm on my fourth rewatch. THAT IS INTENSE. I don't know if I've ever done this with a show before. I-It's just hitting some buttons for me.

Yes, I LOVE how they refrain from emo angsting. I mean, both of them totally have massive, massive issues that sort of DESERVE emo angsting, but Dani's so matter of fact and whatever about it, and Charlie is actually also just delighted to be out of prison and driving fast and eating fruit and whatever, and it's just so much more realistic than the man-pain on so many other shows. I mean, because in real life people have angst, but you can't dwell on it, because hello, no one else cares and you have to go to work, you know?

Oh man, you should totally watch Homicide! It's one of the best shows ever made, I think. In some ways I probably enjoy Life more because it's more a combination of realism and TV sexiness that I enjoy, whereas Homicide is just completely realism -- but Homicide is a better quality show.

Haha, oh man, Will Forte was SO great as the rebound bro, he killed me.

*nods* James Halpert, SLOW THE HELL DOWN. I mean, honestly, I was really shipping them too! I loved how chill and THEM they were with the whole "babe" thing and all that. If she doesn't turn him down, I will be shocked, honestly. Pam is totally going to get this sweet job/internship/etc. opportunity and Jim will propose and then...cue him having identity crisis, hahaha which I think they are trying to get at with this whole thing. I hope.

Re: SVU. I'm starting to think that the writers are taking their jobs for granted. /drips sarcasm/ Hahaha. But Robin Williams, to me, is a phenomenal actor, so he took shit and worked with it, which is always cool. But seriously, this show used to be BETTER! Than this! I swear! ....Right? Hahaha.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)

SIGH. Oh man, I would LOVE it if Pam got another job and had to decide between her awesome new life and marrying Mr. Lame. *FINGERS CROSSED*

Heee. For heaven's sake, I know, right? SVU has just really crossed the line -- it really did use to be better! It was a solid procedural that made sense, without kidnappings and weirdos and terrible characterization. I DON'T EVEN KNOW.

Hahaha. I totally didn't get that for a second and was all "Jim's fishing story, what?".

I feel like him doing that shows more than ever that his relationship with Pam is half-fantasy
Huh. I see what you mean.

I don't like all the engagement/proposal/marriage talk, not for character reasons, but just because showing us the sekrit engagement ring is a corny soap opera story device when you use it in the EIGHTH SEASON your couple have been together, let alone the first, and I'd like the portrayal of Jim/Pam to be more realistic and less dramatic than say, a relationship on Gossip Girl, you know? There doesn't have to be a wedding and a pregnancy every season on The Office. I don't mind that Jim needs to grow up; I just wish the writers had found a way to demonstrate that (if that's what they're doing here) that doesn't involve amnesia, a coma baby, or an engagement ring. (A LONG-LOST IDENTICAL TWIN MIGHT BE FUN, THOUGH.) It stinks of cheese, basically.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-05-07 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahahaha. Jim's precious?

Yeah, I totally agree with you that it is SUPER ANNOYING for this show to be all, engagement! I'm also annoyed that Jim's started bragging to the camera instead of keeping secrets from it, because people trying to hide from the camera is way more interesting.

Also, if they actually get engaged on camera, I will be super depressed. Just, NO.

Hee, WELL YOU BETTER. We are only allowed one opinion between all of us, I don't know if you've noticed.

WHY WON'T THEY GET BACK TOGETHER?

Hahahahahaha. <3 <3 <3! I BELIEVE YOU ARE PLAYING THE ROLE OF BIRTHDAY GIRL.

dude, amen to thinking jim's gotten a little creepy with the ring thing. ::shudders:: and the dinner party episode was SO awkward i almost turned it off, but i kept hoping it would redeem itself somehow . . . it's really making me sad. (and also the reason i am having such a hard time writing my stupid election story - i fail at deadlines!) though i would like karen to take totally coked up ryan to rehab. that would be all sorts of awesome.

i ALSO did not know this week was the season finale of 30rock. what the hell, people? it's like, they took away all our good crack, and as soon as we finally started new lives again, footloose and crack-free, they gave it back to us. of course we took it, because we are easy like that, but they are taking it away AGAIN? FORCE THOSE PEOPLE TO WORK A LITTLE LONGER, DAMMIT!

i loved in treatment, though i never saw the final week, which was lame on my part. but michelle forbes was crazy good, and who knew melissa george could really act? damn, now i have to go find out how it ended. huh.

and honestly? i feel like fandom's relationship to SVU is the equivalent of an abusive relationship. it's like, "wait! i'm sorry! i still love you! here, olivia and elliot are going to be cute together!" and then once they rope you in, it's like, "HAHAH, I AM GOING TO REENACT ONLY THE OLDEST PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY AND SHOW YOU THAT ELLIOT IS THE ONLY GOOD MAN AROUND." and so then you want to leave it again, but then you remember you DID get to see munch in a giant pillow fight.

stop wronging me, SVU! let me cut the ties that bind!

Yeah, I totally enjoyed a lot of Dinner Party, but oh my GOD. And !! KAREN/RYAN REHAB, I... might be into that.

I know, they are really blowing through all the episodes of these shows! Uncool! I can't even deal.

I'm super super impressed with all the actors on In Treatment -- they are just super compelling! I keep watching it today instead of doing my work, it's a problem.

HEE. SVU is EXACTLY an abusive relationship. (God, that stupid psychological study - HI, SVU, EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT THAT, JUST LIKE HOW EVERYBODY EXCEPT YOUR DETECTIVES CAN RECOGNIZE THE VENUS DE MILO. Also, what on earth was the point of him telling Elliot to shock Olivia? Uh... there was no reason Elliot should, it was not exactly replicating the experiment! Yeesh.) But HAHA the pillow fight. True fact.

Re: In Treatment, I've seen everything from ... Week 4? Until the week before the finale. So I saw a lot of it, but then I went back to school where there is no HBO and was too lazy and not quite invested enough to download it. As for the show itself though, anything with Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest in the same room is gonna rock my world.

Also, yes. Life should come back now. It is so good. ... That is all.

Hee, well, it is a lot of downloading, it's taking up a lot of my time. DICKING AROUND IS IMPORTANT TO ME. The acting is really super good, isn't it? I'm on board.

More Lifffffeeeeeee!

Hahahaha, I LIKED YOUR POST. Uh. What else is there to be said that you don't already know. Blah blah hot coked-up Ryan, blah blah Barney loves Ted, blah blah Floyd, blah blah CHARLIE CREWS CHARLIE CREWS CHARLIE CREWS. And so forth.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-05-08 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
HEE. Gosh, it's not like we've discussed any of this, in detail, why are you being so vague?

HEY I LIKE THAT REDHEAD, HOW ABOUT YOU?
