I like how old hymns used words like "interpose."

It's always so weird when I find an mp3 on my computer that I swear to God I've never heard before. Where do they come from? Anyway, apparently Sufjan Stevens has a version (on my computer, what? how?) of "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," which is tied for my first favorite hymn, and it's just -- it's just a really good version, you guys. I might just be having a disturbingly Proustian flashback to college, when we sang it a lot -- but, in retrospect, college was probably the worst four years of my life, so maybe that's not actually affecting me that much. Haha. Anyway, I've had this song on repeat one for like 24 hours straight, and hoo boy, it's been a long time since I've done that. (That's a lie. It's been two weeks, tops.)

REGARDLESS. Here is that and the other music I have been over-listening to in the time since Christmas. Enjoy how I am the last person on earth to realize that The National is really good.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Sufjan Stevens
Insomnia, Electric President
Mr. November, The National
Fake Empire, The National
Start a War, The National

In other news, are any of you guys watching the cop show "Life"? Because, um, I might've finally caved and gotten into it, via the most roundabout possible route. Here is a diagram of how it happened, true story:

Cary Grant --> comedy of remarriage --> [livejournal.com profile] hobviously recommends the "Shakespeare Retold" version of Much Ado about Nothing --> hey, that dude playing Benedick is pretty fantastic --> imdb --> he is also the dude from Band of Brothers, which has been in my Netflix queue for like 3 years?? --> he is also the dude in Life, that show [livejournal.com profile] sloanesomething told me months ago I would like?? --> hey, this Life show is pretty well written --> there's not something else I'm supposed to be doing today, is there?

Sigh. ANYWAY, if you watch it, come talk to me about it -- I've only watched the first 3 episodes, so don't spoil me, but HOLY CRAP, RIGHT?

(Also, Band of Brothers is in the mail, so... be on the lookout for that.)

[identity profile] typicrobots.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically the theme of this comment is that Damian Lewis is a ginger god, Much Ado About Nothing was cute, Life is an awesome show, Band of Brothers may change your life, and I watch way too much TV.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Damian Lewis is a ginger god

This actually made me lol, and then I felt sad about myself. It's funny because it's true? I think he's spontaneously impregnated me like 20 times already, and it's only been like 2 days since I first saw him.

I am REALLY REALLY EXCITED for BoB, I gotta tell you. I've been meaning to watch it for ages and other things kept bumping it off my priorities, but war angst? Best friends? IT MIGHT HIT A FEW OF MY BUTTONS.

[identity profile] ladypeyton.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I watch it. It gets a *little* repetitive after the first three episodes but then gets *amazingly* good by the "end" of the season.

I can't wait for season 2 to start.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hooray! I'm really sad about how the stupid writer's strike cut its season short, but am SO SO SO GRATEFUL that it's already renewed. Otherwise my little heart would be broken.

[identity profile] fiorie.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. THAT HYMN. I think it's from his "Songs For Christmas" album, because I remember listening to it over and over again while wrapping presents. I've only really heard one other modernish version of it, but Sufjan's is far superior.

Heee, out of curiosity, what's "Come Thou Fount" tied with for your favorite? I...maybe have a thing for hymns.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It totally is! God I love it SO MUCH WHY DIDN'T I FIND THIS ON MY HARD DRIVE FOUR YEARS AGO JEEZ.

Hahaha, oh, it's tied with Be Thou My Vision! God, I love those two so much.

[identity profile] neonhummingbird.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, indeed, holy crap. :) That show sucked me in the second Charlie put Reese in the shower and held her up, and never let me go. Awesome stuff.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Auuuuugh, right? I'm looking forward to her character getting more developed, because right now it's so Charlie-centric... not that I'm complaining. Hahaha. It's such a subtle and well-written show, too! Not like cop shows I'm used to.

[identity profile] lianhanshee.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
hey, this Life show is pretty well written ... but HOLY CRAP, RIGHT?

Fuckin' A! /jerseygirl

And I think the phrase you'll be using at the end of the first season run is, MOTHERFUCKING YEAH!

ahem. 'scuse me.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
RIGHT? I am so excited to keep watching it! God, I love how it's a weird combination of SVU and Psych, in terms of mood. Haha.

hey, this Life show is pretty well written --> there's not something else I'm supposed to be doing today, is there?

That was pretty much my week when I discovered the show, I don't think I knew the meaning of "sleep" until I after I was done. Healthy viewing habits? What's that?

The [livejournal.com profile] pers_pineapple comm is currently doing a Life rewatch, and they put up neato-keen thinky posts up for every episode, while I haven't had much to say, it's a lot of fun to see others enjoy the episodes with such...verbosity.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
RIGHT? I stayed up until two because I was so jittery. And then when I had to wake up at 7:45, I wasn't even that tired, I was just adrenalinized and happy. It was weird. Haha. Healthy relationships to TV what?

I'll totally have to go over there and check it out! Thanks for the tip.

[identity profile] grenadine.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeeeeee, I figured you'd be watching Life eventually. Wait 'till you get to "Farthingale", basically my favorite episode of anything that wasn't The Office last year.

Hahahaha. Even I knew I was doomed, dude. I was just under the impression that my cop problem was already taking up more time than it really deserved. YES SVU THAT IS ANOTHER SLIGHT ON YOU, I AM SORRY BUT YOU SUCK.

God, I'm so excited -- it's really all I can do not to watch it every moment I'm awake. It's so SUBTLE. I didn't know cop shows could do that.

Heeeeeeeee. I was like 95% sure that you did. I think I missed listening to it because it's in a file of Christmas songs and I think I didn't get them at Christmastime? Or something? I DIDN'T REALIZE THERE WERE SECRET HYMNS IN THE CHRISTMAS SONGS.

Band of Brothers is a life changing experience, absolutely heartbreaking and uplifting, and on top of that COMPLETELY TRUE. I watch it once a year so I don't get tired of it, and I'll probably show it to the kids in my history class when I start teaching next year.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] vonniek.livejournal.com 2008-03-11 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, AWESOME. Isn't it fab? I fell for it incredibly hard last fall and ended up totally cheating on The Office with the damn show, which made me feel kinda guilty, but God. SO GOOD. The acting is so freakin' fantastic. And the cinematography! The completely awesome music! The characters! (I know Charlie is front and center, but Dani really comes into her own as you watch on. I love her THIIIISSSS MUUUUCH.)

I can't wait for it to come back this fall. Thank God for the renewal. (If you liked the first three, you're gonna love the rest of the sadly-short season.)

Yaaay!

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I AM SO WAY INTO IT. I'm glad I at least get to mainline 11 eps in a row? THOUGH IT IS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH. Season 2, come soon! Seriously, the ACTING. Damian Lewis owns my SOUL. And it's so PRETTY. And subtle! And the characters are all NUANCED. (I am really getting to like Dani a lot as the season goes on. Ahaha, I say from the middle of ep 4. But still!) And it's funny and sad and ahhhhhhh. I REALLY LOVE IT.

[identity profile] ely-jan.livejournal.com 2008-03-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
This may seem random, but what's the other hymn? I love the one you've uploaded (and thank you!) but got to wondering about the tie.

So, The National. I'm pretty sure I can blame you (thank you, whatever) for my current obsession. They are so so completely marvelous and perfectly odd and were it not for my festschrift prompt, I might never have sought out nearly all of their work and listened to them non-stop for the past two weeks or so. So. Good.

Also, Damien Lewis! Life! Band of Brothers! This post you've got here is full of so many things I love, I just don't know what to do with myself! And whoever they've got picking out the music for that show does a fantabulous job.

Awww, it appears as though I've gotten rid of my one Life icon, probably cause I've never actually had an occasion to use it.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-12 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I'm so pleased to hear that about The National! Seriously, I spent like the entire months of January and February listening to them without a break. It was a little sick. BUT DELIGHTFUL! Yay prompt!

I am seriously in love with Damian Lewis auuugh. And the music on that show really is great! I just got done watching episode 4 and yowza. YOWZA, I SAY.

[identity profile] fearlessfan.livejournal.com 2008-03-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
LIFE! That was maybe my favorite new show this season. My favorite episode was episode 6, I think? Powerless? It centers on an AA group. That's what kicked me from liking the show to obsessing over it a bit, and then being a totally dorky Charlie/Dani person - THERE I SAID IT. I love their weird dynamic.

I hope you continue to like the show!

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2008-03-12 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
OMG IT IS SO GOOD, RIGHT? I'm just through ep 4, now, but I am way excited for 6 now! I really like that Dani was in rehab or whatever. A-And I can really tell that I'm going to be horribly into Charlie/Dani. PARTNERS JUST ALWAYS DO IT FOR ME. It's predictable. But I love how he annoys her, and how straightforward she is, and how his zen thing is half working for him and half just that he thinks it's kind of funny. Ahhhhh, killing me.

Have you written any fic for it, by any chance? BECAUSE I COULD BE INTO THAT.

It's okay, I was late on the whole "The National is pretty much one of the Best Things Ever" train of thought too. I didn't even hear about them until a few months ago from a guy I work with. I try to stop listening to them and mix it up a little, but I always come back, haha. Do you have a lot of their stuff? I have all their albums but Alligator and Boxer are my favorites.

How can there be any mention of Damien Lewis without a mention of "The Forsyte Saga."

??????????????????????

Okay. He plays a cold-hearted british prig who walks around with a stick up his ass, but he plays it brilliantly, so I'm just suggesting (loudly and longly) you add that to your Netflix thingalingie.
