FSCMM help

OKAY I AM BEING A HUGE NERD, but I got super interested in the stats on FSCMM re: ladies and characters of color and LGBT characters, especially regarding this year versus previous years, AND I NEED YOUR HELP. I-I am probably going to post some thorough stats later, but right now I just need to know if I'm missing any CoC or LGBT characters for the shows I don't watch, since occasionally the first is easy to miss (lol once I saw someone talking about Ann from Parks as a white girl and I was like, DUDE, RASHIDA'S DAD IS QUINCY JONES, SHE IS BIRACIAL, GET A CLUE), and the second one obviously cannot be told from an imdb picture.

Brian Kinney is gay! (V. surprising, him being from Queer as Folk and all.) I haven't watched Sherlock, but I hear he's asexual? Not sure if that applies here.

Spock is half-vulcan.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
lololol I LEFT BRIAN KINNEY OFF, WHAT IS MY PROBLEM.

Oh wow, Sherlock's asexual? INTERESTING, I had no idea! Hmmmm.

And lololol, yeah, I think with aliens I am going to have to come down on Played By a White Dude = A White Dude, but that actually did occur to me, as regards Doctor Who as well.

[identity profile] fitofpique.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Sherlock Holmes doesn't ever identify himself as asexual (he says that he's married to his work), so I wouldn't add him to the list.

Kono Kalakaua is a CoC (played by Grace Park, who is Korean, I think).

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, good to know on Sherlock! I will leave him off.

I WAS SO PSYCHED GRACE PARK WON, ilher.

Kalinda's bi, Brian Kinney's gay, and Majandra Delfino's Venezuelan but canonically I'm pretty sure Maria was white. (The character was supposed to be Hispanic but they didn't think Majandra looked it, so it was cut, if I remember right. Also the female lead is Hispanic in the books and white on the show, NICE WORK WB.)

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank youuu! Wait, so the character was supposed to be Hispanic, the actress IS Hispanic, but because she didn't look Hispanic enough they changed the character to white? OH WB, THAT IS EPIC.

[identity profile] dudski.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
PRETTY MUCH. She speaks like three words of Spanish in the pilot and that's it for the series, and her only relatives that appeared on the show - her mom and her cousin - were white. Looking around there's this gem:

It's interesting because my character on Roswell was supposed to be Latin and they didn't think I was Latin, so it was a big stretch for them to consider me. [Laughs] No one ever thinks I'm Latin. I guess producers have a pre-conceived notion of what "Latin" looks like. They're also thinking that everyone watching will have a pre-conceived notion. Now they're considering whether or not to publicize the fact that I'm Latin. [Laughs] And whether it will tick people off. I keep telling them, "Don't worry. We're not crazy people like you think!"

WHETHER OR NOT TO PUBLICIZE. JESUS.

[identity profile] onelittlesleep.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I DIDN'T KNOW THIS ABOUT MAJANDRA. DUH. Thanks for the info.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
UGH THIS IS SO DEPRESSING. It's kind of like how apparently Sofia Vergara is naturally blond, but has to die her hair dark because PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE IN BLOND LATINAS or something. DDDDDDD:

[identity profile] cat-eyed-fox.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I always assumed that Maria's dad, who isn't in the show, was Hispanic, but thanks to wacky genetics she takes after her mom. I guess it's that old entertainment problem where if it's not explicitly stated, or totes clear (ie looks/acts/speaks a certain way) a person defaults the American Norm, straight white Christian.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yeah, I never know what to do with that -- if the actor is not white, but could pass, and the show always treats them as white, are they white??? UGH CANON.

[identity profile] cat-eyed-fox.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
And then you've got to think what exactly "treats them as white" means. And it's the same with GLBTT issues. Like just because they're not french kissing people of the same sex doesn't mean that that character is straight.
On one hand should it matter? Aren't we all just people? On the other, yes, yes it does. If WASP is normal for Americans then an evaluation is needed.

LOL YOUR NERDERY.

Not only is Kalinda Sharma a character of color, she's bisexual. ALSO THE BEST AT EVERYTHING. God if this were real life Kalinda Sharma would win the entire game and all the other character wouldn't even realize until it was too late, SHE IS SO SNEAKY AND GOOD.

Also I'm 99% sure Annie Sawyer is mixed-race. The actress is. I think there's an episode where you meet her parents? But I can't remember. According to this site, she's mixed-race.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I AM PRETTY EXCITED FOR THESE STATS, NERD ALERT.

Augh, I can't believe I forgot Kalinda's bi, what is my problem today. UGH YOU'RE RIGHT, I WISH KALINDA WAS INVOLVED IN THE CAMPAIGN, SHE WOULD TAKE IT ALL WITH NO EFFORT. Man, I want her to go so faaaaaaaaaar.

Thanks on Annie Sawyer!

What if they're gay in my head? Is that anything? PerryCoxDanRydellChandlerBing

Also once at sleepaway camp Liz Lemon kissed a girl AND THEN SHE DROWNED.

DO BICURIOUS SHOES COUNT?

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-03 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
HEE, ikr? I wanted to be like, we all know that Dan Rydell is CLEARLY GAY, but since the show didn't say so I guess we can't count it. D:

I'm going to rant a bit, sort of kind of.

I know that the girl who runs it has previously come under all sorts of fire, etc, and that sucks, for srs, but at the same time, I was super disappointed that there was not one, but TWO serious female characters from White Collar unrepresented, particularly when she had one who was only in the first season.

In other news, I actually am sort of crafting a post about this, but literally ONE of those characters is Jewish and he's only got one Jewish parent and his Judaism is represented more as a quirk than anything else.

I wish I could say I'm hormonal right now, but really, this is just me being bitchy about life.

[identity profile] annakovsky.livejournal.com 2011-03-04 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I don't watch White Collar, but when I looked at IMDB, it looked like the characters in the FMM poll were straight up all the characters who appeared in more than 10 episodes of the show, and the character with the next highest amount of episodes was a dude, so... I don't know what to tell you. There's really no way to have every recurring character or guest spot on a show in the poll, and it's not really fair to expect the mod to do so -- this definitely isn't a case of a main character being left off, or of female characters being left off on purpose. Haha, also the mod is a long-time friend of mine, so you're probably barking up the wrong tree in complaining about how she's running the game.

I don't think you're correct on Jewish characters either, actually -- I count three at least in there (Andy Botwin, who actually went to rabbinic school, Dan Rydell, Seth Cohen), and that's only off the top of my head from the shows I know, and I probably only watch half the shows in FMM, soooooo yeah, there could easily be even more.

Anyway, I'm just psyched that this year isn't like the first year this game got big, when 75% of the characters fandom voted for were straight white Christian men, haha.

To clarify: I'm not actually complaining about how she's running the game. As I said, it super sucks that she's had a rough time in years past, and having been friends with more than a few people who run large challenges, I know how screwed up that can be. I was more just...I suppose disappointed that there's not a better way to control for it. But yeah, I don't expect that she would have any way of doing so because she CAN'T be aware of all fandoms.

I was unaware about Dan Rydell because despite having watched a fair number of SN episodes, it evidently never came up in any of them, nor was it signified in any way in any of them, which isn't really surprising, given my thesis about Jewish representation in Western Media. (Which, to be clear, I do NOT think is an issue of anti-Semitism. At all.)

I do not know the character Andy Botwin, but now I'm pretty interested.

And yeah, that's a definite plus/step in the right direction.
