Dude, this is so freaky, because I was just catching on some music blogs, and was traumatising all my workmates with the various covers of "Suicide is Painless" from Stereogum (http://www.stereogum.com/archives/002812.html) and now you post this and this is so fantastic and a little bitter and filled with so many quiet, sweet little moments like:

"In Pennsylvania, his dad tells him, it's been rainy lately, and the grass is getting long. His mother's planting snapdragons."

and

"The sun's rising behind her, so for a second she's just a silhouette and there's brightness all around her. He doesn't sleep for a long time, thinking about it."

and

"She opens her eyes too and they watch each other through the green water, floating in the quiet."

Honestly, I could quote pretty damn near all of it (the scene, when Toby comes out of the tent, and his normally comical hangdog look is now more depressing than amusing because it's war, and Human Relations means dealing with last rights more than anything else? GAH.)

Not only did you make the AU work, it was a wonderful read as well. Wow.
